Base and Motor

The base of the Breville BJE820XL (which houses its powerful 1200-watt motor) is a heavy, brushed metallic stainless steel construction. The weight of the juicer never makes the unit “wobbly” or unstable. However, it isn’t too heavy for an adult to move around the counter easily.

The motor assembly is nicely heavy and this adds considerable stability when juicing harder fruits and vegetables. The last small piece of an item may slide under the juicer shroud and into the basket which momentarily puts the basket out of balance. That’s perfectly normal. It hardly sags under even the hardest fruits, but when it does, the speed sensing circuitry adds power to the motor to keep it at the set speed.

The motor of the Breville BJE820XL will shut down if there is any obstruction or if it is pushed too hard. This stops the motor of the juicer from burning out. Although this appeared at first to be a flaw, actually it is a safety feature.

Multi Speed

The juicer has five speed settings. This multi-speed feature allows you to properly juice hard and soft fruits and veggies properly (Breville only recommends using the lowest setting with the puree assembly).

Tip: You should definitely follow the guidelines in the instructions for which setting for which fruit or vegetable.

Quiet

The Breville BJE820XL is fairly quiet at the lowest setting, used for soft fruits like grapes and citrus. However, at its highest setting it sounds very loud. If this is a problem for you, maybe you should consider buying a quieter juicer like the Omega Vert HD VRT350.

Design

The plastic parts are extremely well made and heavy duty. The clear lid is thick and strong. The waste bucket of the machine fits nicely under the lid, holding it in place so you never get “veggie parts” flying around your kitchen. This model comes with a nice clear juice pitcher that nestles under the angled juice spout (tube).

The Breville BJE820XL assembles and disassembles very easily in 5 steps that are clearly explained in the manual. Also, the juicer can be assembled to operate as a centrifugal juicer, which will separate the fibers contained in fruits and vegetables from the juice, or as a juice processor, which liquefies soft fruits without separating the fibers.

Also, without a bunch of erroneous attachments, you don’t feel like this one appliance is taking over my entire kitchen occupying precious needed counter-top and cupboard space. The pulp bin (the waste catcher) snugs right up into the back of the machine; no additional countertop cleaning when you’re done. The acrylic juice container is made specifically to have the juice tap fit right into it. Even the power cord with its convenient & sturdy finger loop is designed with the end-user in mind.

The Breville BJE820XL has a 3″ wide chute that allows you to process whole fruits and vegetables without pre-cutting and it comes with an extra-large 1.2 liter jug with froth separator.

What isn’t made of steel is made of clear acrylic or durable polycarbonate. The blades that either juice or puree your fruits/vegetables are frightening-looking discs of a copper-colored metal.

Two Disk System

The two disk system (juicing and puree) of the juicer is really great: the basic difference is that juicing extracts the juice while separating the pulp, and puree mashes everything together into the drinking pitcher. It purees fruits such as mangoes, oranges and bananas, and retains the fiber rich fiber pulp for thick, all-fruit smoothies. It’s also great for making healthy dips, sauces, soups and sorbets.

Juicing

The juice this machine makes is great: you can control the pulp that you get, or don’t get. The pulp comes very dry, which reassured you that you are getting maximum juice output.

It makes wonderful fruit smoothies and you don’t have to add milk just fruit. With a blender you have to add a liquid but with my Breville it’s just pure and natural.

Cleaning

Clean the Breville BJE820XL is a fairly easy task as it comes apart and all pieces can go in the dishwasher. And with the included cleaning brush, getting into all the various nooks and crannies of all the different parts is a simple process.

Each part of the juicer separates from the base easily and cleanly, and you can clean the entire thing by rinsing, except for the juicing disc which requires soap and the included brush to ensure it stays free of lingering fiber. Remember that the juicer disc & attached filter basket (which is dishwasher safe) must be handled with care.

The Good Things

The Not so Good Things

• Expensive.
• This isn’t a huge machine, but if you don’t have a lot of counter space it can take up a lot of space that you may not have.
• More parts than a blender. This is for the people new to juicing, though cleanup is essentially easy, there are a lot of parts that need to be washed after each use and it can take a lot of time to do it.

Conclusion

The Breville BJE820XL is beautiful, easy to set up and a breeze to clean. However, those are secondary to its sheer power and speed. This juicer makes quick work of anything you throw at it: carrots 5-6 at a time, apples, beets are no match (even a lower speeds). Switch discs and it efficiently juices strawberries, oranges, and leafy vegetables. You know its juiced every last drop by how dry the pulp is.

With a 1200 watt motor encased in a stainless steel housing, you know this juicer is going to last. The quality work on the stainless juicing shroud alone is a work of art.

The Breville BJE820Xl, while pricey, makes the expression “you get what you pay for” more true than ever.

Don’t think twice about buying this machine: the quality, power and easy clean up make this juicer a CLEAR cut winner.
